Resurgens Orthopaedics’ Surgeons Help Homeless Men Through Our Hearts to Your Soles Event

Published December 1, 2015

Drs. Gary Stewart, Sourendra Raut, Phillip Walton and Deborah Kowalchuk, orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons at Resurgens Orthopaedics, continued the practice’s commitment to serving others by providing free foot exams and shoe fittings to homeless men in metro Atlanta during Our Hearts to Your Soles event.

The 2015 Our Hearts to Your Soles event, held Nov. 23 at the Central Night Shelter in downtown Atlanta, served 95 men. Each man received a foot exam, a new pair of shoes, and a new pair of socks.

Dr. Stewart began working with the Our Hearts to Your Soles project during his fellowship in Pittsburgh, and says it’s his favorite volunteer activity.  Since then, he has brought this event to Atlanta, and with the help of other physicians in the practice, it has grown over the nine years Resurgens Orthopaedics has been participating.

“It is important to remember to give back, especially this time of year,” said Dr. Stewart. “There is so much need in the world, and to some, a foot exam and new shoes can go a long way.”

“We were happy to help provide foot care and education for the men at the Central Night Shelter,” said Dr. Phillip Walton.  “These events offer an opportunity to help those in need, and serves to underscore the true meaning of the holiday season.   To a man, everyone with whom we interacted voiced their appreciation for our care, and a desire to remain engaged in their own foot care moving forward. I certainly look forward to participating in this and other events next year.”

In addition to the four Resurgens Orthopaedics physicians who came out to support this cause, there were two residents, Ben Rogozinski, MD, fourth year Resident at Atlanta Medical Center, Department of Orthopaedics and Damien Wood, fourth year medical student at Morehouse School of Medicine.  Numerous Resurgens Orthopaedics employees and their families assisted at the event, including Dr. Stewart’s two young children.

Nationwide, there are about 50 Our Hearts to Your Soles sites, and the program provides shoes to nearly 5,000 people each year.
